An Aesthetician’s Take: Why Your Eyes Deserve Their Own Skincare Step
If I had a dollar for every time a client asked, “Do I really need an eye serum?” I could retire on a beach, slathered in SPF, of course.
As an aesthetician with over 15 years of hands-on skincare experience, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference proper eye care can make. The skin around your eyes is often the first place to reveal what your lifestyle, hydration, and skincare habits are really like. And no, your face cream alone isn’t always cutting it here, depending on your concerns.
Why the Eye Area Needs Special Attention
Here’s what you need to know: the skin under your eyes is thinner, more delicate, and produces less oil than the rest of your face. That means it dries out faster, shows lines sooner, and can’t handle overly rich or active products as easily.
It’s also under constant motion. Blinking, smiling, squinting. All of it puts extra stress on that fragile skin.
What Causes Under-Eye Bags and Puffiness?
Let’s start with the basics, because understanding the why behind under-eye bags and puffiness can make a big difference in how you treat them.
Puffiness under the eyes is often caused by fluid retention, which can be triggered by things like lack of overall sleep, allergies, high salt intake, or even how you slept last night. As we age, the tissues around the eyes weaken, and fat can shift forward, leading to that “baggy” look that no amount of concealer can hide.
Throw in genetics, late nights, and environmental stressors, and it’s no wonder the eye area is one of the first places to show signs of fatigue.
However, with the right product and proper technique, this area can look brighter, smoother, and more refreshed.
Myth Bust Moment:
“I just use my moisturiser all over. Isn’t that enough?”
I hear this a lot, and honestly, if your main concern is hydration or you are in your teens/early 20’s... you can sometimes get away with using a lightweight facial moisturiser around the eye. However, while I love a multitasking product as much as the next person, most moisturisers are formulated for thicker facial skin and don’t have the texture, ingredients, or delivery system that the eye area really needs. Especially when we consider the more difficult to target concerns, wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles, etc
The One I Recommend: Squalane + 5% Niacinamide Brightening Eye Serum
When clients ask me for an eye product that works and fits into a simple routine, I always look for three things:
A lightweight texture, targeted ingredients, and a gentle delivery system.
This serum checks all the boxes.
-
5% Niacinamide helps even tone and strengthens the barrier
-
Vitamin C brightens and protects
-
Caffeine helps visibly reduce puffiness
-
Peptides support firmness and smooth texture
-
Squalane delivers weightless hydration without any heaviness
Yes, the ingredients are impressive, but this product is levelled up by having a built-in application tool. An extremely unique 360-degree lymphatic drainage roller ball. It’s like a tiny spa treatment in your pocket.
The cooling metal rollerball makes application easy and extremely hygienic because the product is dispensed from the top and none of the product goes back into the bottle. Talk about convenience! This reduces the need for using a gua sha or an ice roller, all wonderful in theory, but in reality, I never seem to have enough time to add that into my routine. With this applicator easily rolling on the skin, no pulling or tugging, it makes depuffing honestly kind of addictive.
When to Use It in Your Routine
Think of your eye serum like your morning and evening espresso shot. It goes on early and sets the tone.
Apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser or face serum, both AM and PM.
Here’s how your routine might look:
-
Cleanser
-
Toner (optional)
-
Eye serum
-
Face serum
-
Moisturiser
-
SPF (in the morning, always)
Pro Tip from the Treatment Room:
Apply eye products while your skin is still slightly damp. It helps with absorption and leaves the area looking instantly refreshed.
How to Apply It (Gently, Please)
-
Dot, Roll, Press!
-
Gently squeeze the tube and place a few dots under and above the eye area.
-
Turn the product flat against the face. Use the rollerball to glide a small amount of serum under the eye, from inner to outer corner
-
Tap it in gently using your ring finger. Never rub or pull
-
Don’t forget the outer corners and the space between your brows. Those “11” lines love this stuff too
AM = wake up tired eyes
PM = repair and deeply hydrate

Final Thoughts From Your Aesthetician
The best results I’ve seen in clients over the years always come from consistency, especially around the eyes. You can easily be consistent with this eye serum because it is a pleasure to use.
Don’t skip this step. Treat your under-eyes with intention, and your whole face will look more awake, more even, and more refreshed. And if you’re going to start with just one product, make it this one. It’s gentle, effective, and easy to fit into any routine.
Tired eyes aren’t a skin type. They’re a solvable skincare moment. Excited to hear your thoughts!
