Han’s Top Tips For New Runners!

If you're new to running, well done! It's not easy to pick up a new activity, so be proud of yourself for getting out there. Over the years, I've worked with many clients who have started running for many different reasons; whatever your reason, my advice to new runners is:

  • Get some good shoes: This is the best place to start, but it can be very confusing with so many different running shoes on the market. See a podiatrist if you have concerns (high arches, flat feet, shin splints, knee pain), or go to a shop that properly assesses your gait and running style.
  • Ease into it. Don't go into this with any ideas of how fast you want to run. Just get out there and do what feels natural rather than thinking that you need to push yourself for it to count. Starting with interval runs where you run/walk is a great way to let your body adapt to the new load and get a feel for your natural pace.
  • Follow a program: there are a lot of options out there, including the @ourpilates 5km program. Following a program will give you structure and help you manage your weekly load so that you get to your goal safely by minimising your risk of injury.
  • Variety! Try running in different locations, listening to different music or podcasts, or running with a friend once a week - mix it up to keep things interesting.
  • If something doesn't feel right, get it checked out by a physio. Some running niggles are nothing to worry about, but some are, and until you get used to how your body feels during and after a run, I would be a little cautious and get any niggles assessed.
  • Do stretches and strengthening exercises: the load of running is new to your body, and you need to build strength to support this new load. Our Pilates running classes are the perfect compliment to a running program. You can access these with any of our memberships.
  • Warm-up and cool down. This is the downfall of many runners because they just want to run. A warm-up and cool-down will take 5 minutes each and will make all the difference to your recovery.
  • Have fun! This is so important. Enjoy putting your runners on and getting outside. Starting something new should be an enjoyable process. Don't make it a chore by putting unnecessary expectations on yourself; just get out there, have fun and give it a go.
